Matson Sewell received her MS in Management/Healthcare Administration from New England College and Masters in Public Health from Dartmouth Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Clinical Practice in 2006. She has worked in healthcare for over 35 years, initially as a physical therapist at the University of California in San Francisco, then in hospital personnel and administration, before beginning her risk management and patient safety career in 1990. She worked as a Regional Risk Manager and a claims investigator for the Dartmouth Alliance of hospitals and clinics in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. In 2006 she returned to California as a Patient Safety/Risk Management Account Executive for The Doctors Company followed by serving as Director of Risk Management for Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Matson has pioneered innovative methods for addressing recurrent patient injuries identified through malpractice claims analysis. This approach – Claims-based Patient Safety – strives to include the most serious malpractice losses into prevention strategies and patient safety initiatives. Matson currently has her own patient safety consulting business.
